Music Workshops Art Workshps

Music Workshops:
These Workshops have all been added to our Calendar Page.
All participants in workshops should remember to wear comfortable close toed shoes and cloths that can get dirty (mistakes and paint do happen).There is no child care available. Parents, you are responsible for your children at all times. All children 13 and under must be with a parent or guardian. This is a working art studio!  

Bucket Brigade Workshop

When: April 26th, 2008
Where: Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times: 10:00 am –3:00 pm
All ages welcome

Join the band and make your own drum and drum sticks out of 5 gallon buckets or 5 gallon water jugs. Participants will construct and decorate their own drum complete with a harnessing system for ease of playing while walking along in the parade. Also, the participants will learn and practice a few simple rhythms to play together and have fun. In addition to the drum construction participants will create a decorative head dress to where in the parade.

Bell Boy (and Girl) Band Workshop

When: April 26th, 2008
Where:Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times: 3:00 pm- 5:00 pm
Under 10 yrs accompanied by an adult

Join the band and construct a simple bell to be played during the parade. Participants will make and learn to play some simple songs together to add a melodic element to the parade festivities. In addition to the bell construction participants will create a decorative head dress to where in the parade.

Shake! Shake! Shake! Shaker Construction Workshop

When: April 26th, 2008
Where: Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times: 10:00 am- 5:00 pm
All ages welcome

Our goal is to make 200 shakers and rattles to pass out to the audience to increase to participation level of our event. Participants in this workshop will create a one of a kind shaker for themselves to play the day of the Procession and hopefully a few more to aid in our goal of 500.

All art workshops have a kid friendly equivalent workshop in conjunction with them. There is no child care available. Parents, you are responsible for your children at all times. All children 13 and under must be with a parent or guardian. This is a working art studio!

Mask Making Workshop

When: March 29th, 2008
Where: Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times:10:00 am- 5:00 pm
All ages welcome
Bring: pictures of the plant or animal that will be made into a mask

Participants will have the opportunity to make a paper mache mask of any plant or animal that they would like to be for the parade. Various mask styles will be utilized to fit the animals being created, from helmet masks, half masks to full face masks.

Batik Butterfly Wing Workshop

When: April 5th, 2008
Where:Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times: 10:00 am- 5:00 pm
Under 13 yrs accompanied by an adult. This is a workshop that involves hot wax so caution needs to be observed.

Come and flutter around the Procession in your very own handmade butterfly wings. Participants will learn the art of batik to create their own vibrantly colorful butterfly wings. Batik is a way to decorate fabric by painting wax onto the fabric and creating a wax resist to keep colors that are painted on separated.

Giant Puppet Construction Workshop

When: April 12th and 13th, 2008
Where: Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
All ages welcome

Come and join us for the construction of several giant puppets to be featured in this year’s procession. This is a communal art activity that any one can led a hand in. This workshop will be all day, so drop in any time. Some of the activities will include paper mache, crumples paper sculpting, card board sculpting, painting and costume creating.

Critter on a Stick Workshop

When: May 3rd, 2008
Where: Community Action Parking Lot (104 E Center Street, Oakland, MD)
Times: 10:00 am -12:30 pm
All ages welcome

This workshop offers an easy way to become involved with the procession of the species on the day of the parade. Participants will paint, decorate and mount on a pole pre-cut cardboard cut outs of various animals to be held up high for all to see.

Batik Banner Workshop

When: April 19th, 2008
Where: Oakland Armory 14 North Eighth St.
Times: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Under 13 yrs accompanied by an adult. This is a workshop that involves hot wax so caution needs to be observed.

The skies are alive with color. Participants will create a one of a kind batik flags or banners to add a bit of life and color to the skies above the procession path.
